Sue Roche Illustration – Sunday Artist Interview

Continuing on with the Sunday Artist Interviews – many are lined up, so keep checking back, I think we need a few more distractions from the rather scary times we’re all living in right now! I’ve actually been doing these interviews over a year now! Here’s Sue to tell you a bit about herself and her art….

First of all, who are you?

Hi I’m Sue Roche better known as Sue Roche Illustration. I live in A small town called Rochford in Essex with my hubbie, mum and sister who are all slightly disabled so I’m pretty busy but love helping out where I can.  I’m at my happiest going away in Bertie our campervan and sitting down designing and painting in watercolours.

When you were asked (all those years ago!), “what do you want to be when you grow up?”  What did you answer?

When asked years ago I wanted to be a Butcher, goodness knows why as I’m now a vegetarian ?

What is the funniest thing as an artist that has ever happened to you?

Not so much funny but it’s weird how things happen sometimes.  Whilst painting a customers name art I splattered paint on the letters by mistake.  Not wanting to start the lengthy process again I turned the splattered paint into little tiny leaves and added some vines. A happy accident. Now I’m asked to include them in all my designs.

What is the hardest part of being creative?

Hardest part of being creative is doing it to order. It’s a natural thing for me but not all the time. Now I give at least three weeks waiting period for custom logos, name arts, and other designs, that way I’m sure to have a spell when I’m feeling creative.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?

Other Artists starting out, I would say have your finger in lots of pots. Make prints, cards, mugs and coasters etc from your designs you would be surprised how much busier you will be.

What subjects inspire you?

My inspiration comes from my grandkid’s art, I love how simple it is – then I add my own quirky style. F or instance my granddaughter loved drawing Bees so I usually try and sneak one in somewhere. Ooh and I love animals, guinea pigs are just so cute.

Who are the 3 greatest living artists in your opinion? (they don’t have to be famous!)

I’m also loving Alice Hole (find her on Instagram) she is a Cornish landscape artist her work is incredible. I also love Cornwall. My daughter Gemma Martin known as @sweetsorrowillustration on Instagram and Banksy of course what a creative mind.

Who are the 3 greatest dead artists in your opinion?

My top Artists are Michelangeo, what a talent that man had, and Monet and Constable who I studied at college and loved the realism.

What is your favourite work of art you have ever produced?

My favourite art so far is my Bee on a thistle in ink and watercolours.

What was the last piece of art you sold?

Last piece of art sold is this name art its full of mum and dad’s fav things. This was a challenge incorporating everything requested.

And finally… Because this is really important….

What’s the best type of cheese?  (haha)

Best cheese… All of them but if I had to choose Stilton.
